Tensions flared in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State as angry youths launched a violent protest on Sunday evening, setting parts of the Rano Divisional Police Station ablaze following the alleged brutal treatment and subsequent death of a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, while in police custody.
The unrest spiraled into chaos as protesters torched vehicles, vandalized property, and reportedly attacked police officers. In a statement issued by the Kano State Police Command, it was confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the station sustained critical injuries during the attack and later died while receiving treatment at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
According to the police, Musa was arrested after multiple complaints alleging he was riding recklessly and possibly under the influence of drugs. While in custody, he reportedly became weak and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he died the following morning during treatment.
However, the news of his death sparked outrage in the community. Eyewitnesses claimed the protest was initially peaceful but turned violent after police allegedly opened fire on demonstrators, injuring two youths—Kabiru Muhammad and Muhammad Ibrahim—who are now receiving treatment at Rano General Hospital.
“We were protesting peacefully. We only wanted answers about what happened to Abdullahi Musa. But they started shooting at us,” a community source said under anonymity. “It’s a sad day for our community. Abdullahi was not a criminal. We want justice.”
During the chaos, the police station was looted, partially set ablaze, and two vehicles were completely burnt, while 10 others were vandalized. A total of 27 suspects have been arrested in connection with the violence, according to the police.
Police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted. “Incident in Rano, thorough investigation will be conducted by the Grace of God,” he stated.
In a swift move to restore calm, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, visited Rano for an on-the-spot assessment and to supervise the restoration of law and order.
In a separate incident reported in Benue State, at least seven persons lost their lives in a lone accident involving a truck loaded with cement. Further details on the Benue accident are expected in subsequent reports.
