A Nigerian man based in the United States, Goodluck Ikechukwu Nshi, has been accused of bigamy after allegedly returning to Nigeria to secretly marry a younger woman, despite being legally married with four children.
Nshi, a nurse originally from Nkalaha in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, and his wife—also a nurse—have lived and worked in the US for years. The couple has four children and were reportedly still residing together as of June 2025, although sources say their relationship had become strained.
According to a source familiar with the situation, the marriage had broken down due to “repeated neglect, infidelity, and general disregard” by Mr. Nshi. In response, the wife filed for divorce in a US court in February 2025. However, the divorce has not been finalized, and both parties continued living under the same roof.
Despite the ongoing US divorce proceedings, Mr. Nshi allegedly returned to Nigeria and initiated a parallel divorce process in a Nigerian court, reportedly without the knowledge of his wife or the American court. Sources claim he did this to avoid financial and parental obligations tied to the US proceedings.
On June 13, 2025, Mr. Nshi reportedly appeared in court in Nigeria to give testimony related to the divorce case, and just one day later, on June 14, he married another woman. The new bride is said to be his former mistress, whom he met in Nigeria during a 2022 visit under the guise of attending a professional conference.
The secret wedding, held in Nigeria, came to light after the first wife began receiving calls from friends and relatives. The development has sparked outrage among family and community members, with allegations of bigamy now hanging over Mr. Nshi.
Under Nigerian law, bigamy is a criminal offense if a person, already legally married, marries another without a lawful divorce. Legal experts say if proven, Mr. Nshi could face prosecution, especially given the international implications involving conflicting divorce filings in two jurisdictions.
Sources allege Mr. Nshi has continued to misrepresent the situation, claiming his wife abandoned him and took the children—an assertion those close to the family say is part of a broader pattern of deception.
