The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for Monday’s deadly roadside bombing in Borno State, which left 26 people dead and several others injured.
The terrorist group made the announcement via its Telegram channel on Tuesday, a day after the attack.
The explosion occurred around 12:00 p.m. on Monday near Furunduma village, when an Isuzu pickup van carrying passengers from Kala-Balge to Gamboru Ngala Local Government Area ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram fighters.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said 26 people were killed in the blast, including 16 men, four women, and six children.
“Earlier today at about 12:00 p.m., an Isuzu pickup van with registration number XA265KKU en route from Kala-Balge to Gamboru Ngala stepped on an IED around Furunduma village. The tragic incident led to the death of 26 persons—16 males, four females, and six children,” Daso said.
He added that the driver and two other victims sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
Monday’s attack came just over two weeks after a similar bombing on the Maiduguri–Damboa Road, which claimed eight lives and left 11 others critically injured when a Hummer bus struck another IED.
