The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested popular Nigerian social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju confirmed the arrest in a post on his official Facebook page on Friday evening.
Initial reports suggested that the arrest followed a directive from Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), allegedly in retaliation for VDM’s public criticism of the bank over suspicious transactions involving his mother’s account.
Providing further updates, Adeyanju stated that a legal team from his firm, led by the Head of Chambers, Marvin Omorogbe, visited the EFCC facility and met with VDM’s friend, who was also arrested.
“VDM refused to come out of the cell, insisting he wouldn’t see anyone,” Adeyanju wrote. “He and his friend were detained after being trapped at GTB’s exit door for over five minutes to allow EFCC officials to arrest them.”
Adeyanju added that his firm would be initiating legal action against GTB for what he described as “inhumane treatment” of their client.
